Things to Do in Batam Island: Student Travelers' Guide

If you're a student traveler seeking an exciting and budget-friendly adventure, **Batam Island** should definitely be on your radar. I recently had the pleasure of exploring this vibrant destination from August 16th to 19th with two fellow Polish friends, Ania and Michalina, during our semester exchange. Our trip was a fantastic blend of cultural exploration, local cuisine, and memorable experiences, making Batam an ideal spot for student travelers looking to immerse themselves in a new environment.

Exploring Batam Island: A Student's Adventure

Our journey began with a meeting at the harbor front and VivoCity shopping mall in Singapore, where we connected with our friend Nikolas, an Indonesian student studying with us in Aarhus. From there, we hopped on a ferry with Majestic Fast Ferry and set sail for Batam Island, just a short ride away.

Day 1: Immersive Local Experiences

Our first evening was all about diving straight into local flavors at Nikolas's mum's restaurant, a charming warung. The menu was a mouth-watering introduction to **authentic Indonesian cuisine**, featuring dishes like:

- Satay chicken with rich peanut sauce.

- Mie goreng (fried noodles) bursting with flavor.

- A unique sweet drink made with sparkling water, condensed milk, and fruity jam.

We couldn’t resist sampling Martabak, a sweet, puffy local cake topped with cheese, sesame, and chocolate. It was a delightful start to our culinary journey. Traveling around Batam, we were charmed by the well-maintained roads, buzzing scooters, and the island’s welcoming atmosphere. Our evening ended with a visit to a stunning grand mosque near the harbor, showcasing Indonesia’s rich Islamic heritage.

Day 2: Authentic Local Encounters

The next morning began with a hearty breakfast prepared by Nikolas's mum. Her homemade fish cakes were the best I’d ever had, and they fueled us for a day filled with intriguing experiences. One highlight was visiting a local physiotherapist whose almost mystical healing techniques provided both fascinating and amusing insights into traditional wellness practices.

We enjoyed lunch at Restaurant Garuda, where we savored the famous beef rendang, a must-try dish for any traveler. In the afternoon, we relocated to Nongsa Point Marina, a breathtaking seaside villa complex with sweeping views of Marina Bay in Singapore. We took a warm evening swim and embraced the festive spirit of Indonesia's National Day, surrounded by vibrant celebrations and a festive atmosphere.

Day 3: Discovering Local Delicacies and Attractions

Our third day was packed with new adventures, from pristine beaches to lush natural landscapes. A seafood feast awaited us at Rezeki Seafood Restaurant, where we sampled an impressive spread of sea snails, crab, scallops, and calamari, all at student-friendly prices. Batam is truly a paradise for seafood lovers!

Later, we experienced the lively nightlife at Arch Alley, a trendy new bar where we sipped Jasmine-flavored drinks and enjoyed live music. The atmosphere was electric, and it was the perfect way to wind down a day full of exploration.

Day 4: Final Explorations and Souvenirs

On our last day, we treated ourselves to a delicious international breakfast at Anchor Cafe & Roastery. I also had the chance to try luwak coffee, an unusual brew made from beans that pass through a civet's digestive system. The experience was surprisingly smooth and enjoyable, adding an adventurous twist to our morning.

Before heading back, we explored a gallery connected to the harbor, which offered unique finds like dried jackfruit and tempeh chips. Shopping for souvenirs was a fun way to engage with the locals, who were incredibly warm and friendly, making our last moments in Batam unforgettable.
