Cambodia Safe to Travel: Essential Travel Budget Tips for Students

Traveling to Cambodia on a student budget can be an exciting yet daunting experience. With concerns about safety and expenses, it’s crucial to be well-prepared. Here's a comprehensive guide to help student travelers navigate Cambodia safely while keeping costs low.

Trip Overview

From August 29th to September 1st, I embarked on an adventurous trip to Cambodia with Michalina, Lisa, and a group of fellow exchange students from Singapore. Our team, initially six, was joined by two German students, making for a diverse and dynamic travel experience.

Safety in Cambodia

Before our trip, I had reservations about Cambodia’s safety due to limited information and some concerning online content. However, our experience proved that Cambodia is indeed safe to travel, especially in a group. We encountered no dangerous situations, although we did face minor issues with Tuk Tuk drivers attempting to scam us. Fortunately, these incidents were resolved without major problems. Overall, the local people were friendly, many spoke good English, and were eager to assist us.

Travel Budget Tips

1. Travel Costs:  

• Flights and Visa: We initially budgeted 330 SGD, but expenses totaled around 410 SGD, mainly due to visa fees, Angkor Wat entrance fees, and a late-night Grab ride from the airport. The visa on arrival cost 30 USD, but you can streamline the process by applying in advance.
• Accommodation: We stayed at Onederz in Siem Reap, which was both affordable and convenient. For budget travelers, staying at hostels or guesthouses like this is ideal.
• Transportation: To save on travel expenses, we opted for night buses, costing approximately 10 USD each way. These buses not only saved us accommodation costs but also provided a comfortable experience with options for single or double beds.
  
  
  
  
  

2. Daily Expenses: 

• Food and Dining: We enjoyed a hearty breakfast at a local restaurant before exploring Angkor Wat. Cambodian cuisine was both delicious and budget-friendly. Street foods and local dishes gave us an authentic taste of Cambodian flavors while keeping costs low.
• Activities: At Angkor Wat, we balanced walking and Tuk Tuk rides. We walked for most of the day and used Tuk Tuks towards the end, managing to see the temples and catch the sunset while staying within budget. • Tuk Tuk Rides: Tuk Tuks are the cheapest and most popular mode of transportation in Cambodia. Always negotiate prices beforehand and use apps like Grab to compare costs. Bargaining is common, so don’t hesitate to ask for lower rates.
